Q #1: How much will it cost to replace my furnace?

A: It is impossible to quote a price without first checking conditions at the job site. We simply cannot determine what the price will be without this first step. Price will be influenced by many factors including which model you choose (there are currently six models to choose from with Trane), the size, location, condition of the existing duct system, and job site conditions. We don't charge you anything to come out to your house and give you a written proposal, customized especially for your situation, showing you your prices and your various choices. In almost all cases, the proposal is written up for you on the spot with no waiting to receive it in the mail.

Q #2: How much will it cost to install a complete new heating system with new duct system, gas line, electrical circuit, etc.?

A: See answer to question #1.

Q #3: Can I make payments on a new furnace so I don't have to pay for it all at once?

A: Yes. We accept credit cards and we offer several financing plans so that you can make small monthly payments rather that paying it all at once.

Q #4: Will I save money on my energy bill by installing a new furnace?

A: Yes. Modern furnaces have AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) ratings of at least 80% and go up to the mid 90% range depending on the model and size. An AFUE rating of 80% means that every time your furnace uses $1 worth of gas, .20 is lost in the form of wasted heat going up the flue pipe to the outside. Older furnaces would waste .30 to .40 per $1 spent.

Furnaces are also available with very high efficiency variable speed motors so that you can save money on your electrical costs as well as natural gas costs. In most cases the variable speed motor will save you more on your energy bill that the higher AFUE rating will. Actual dollar amount of savings per year depends on how the system is used. Important factors are how high you set the thermostat and whether or not you make use of setbacks while sleeping or away at work. The duct system must also be in good shape, sealed and insulated, in order to realize the maximum savings.

If you have a reason to run the blower continuously such as a two story house or the use of an air cleaner the variable speed motor can save hundreds of dollars per year on electricity.

Q #5: What size furnace do I need for my house?

A: Contrary to popular belief proper sizing has very little to do with the total square footage of the home. Furnaces are rated in BTUH (British Thermal Units per Hour). One BTUH is about the same amount of heat you would get by burning an ordinary kitchen match. We need to choose a furnace with a heat output equal to or greater than the heat loss of your home under a certain set of conditions during the winter time. In Sonoma County we design a heating system to keep your home at 70 degrees inside when it's 29 degrees outside. A calculation is done on your home taking into account the exposed walls, floors, and ceilings. We measure insulation levels and window areas. Once we have the results of the calculation we can choose the right size furnace.

Q #6: Do I need a permit to install a new furnace and if so what's involved in getting a permit?

A: Yes. Whether you live in the city or the county a permit is a legal requirement. The issuance of a permit for a furnace replacement involves completing an application, taking it to the building department, paying the fees, and posting the permit on the job site. After the work is done the city or county inspector will come to your house to inspect the furnace installation and sign off the permit. Some companies illegally do these jobs without a permit and when they get caught the homeowner gets the fine. At Adams Heating and Cooling we take care of getting the permit for you and scheduling the final inspection.

Q #7: After I have a new furnace installed will it require any maintenance?

A: Yes. If you have a heating only system (no air conditioning) we suggest that you have us come out once per year to do a complete tune up on the system. Filter changes should be done every couple of months too. Keeping the system clean is the name of the game. As filters and blower wheels get dirty the efficiency of the system plummets, the energy bill climbs, and your comfort level drops. Regular tune ups also extend equipment life and help to prevent mechanical break downs.

Q #8: Can you make my heating system also function as an air cleaning system with special filters or air cleaners?

A: Yes. There are several options here. Available today are electronic air cleaners, high efficiency media type air cleaners, TRANE CleanEffects, and electrostatic filters. A brief discussion with one of our representatives will determine which one is right for you. Use of an air cleaner in conjunction with one of the furnaces with a high efficiency variable speed motor makes for a high quality air cleaning system that can run constantly and cost very little on your energy bill.

Q #9: Can you make my heating system quiet enough not to bother my when I'm trying to sleep?

A: Yes. Furnace location is critical to noise levels in the home. A furnace, which is located in a closet near a bedroom, can be a nuisance and in this situation we suggest that you install a sealed combustion furnace which is extremely quiet. You can stand right next to the furnace while it's running and still hardly hear it. Trane furnaces are also very high efficiency both on gas and electrical usage. Proper design and sizing of the duct system is also critical to insure a quiet system. At Adams Heating and Cooling we take pride in designing systems which are comfortable, quiet, and efficient.
